Active Chair Yoga

In this class, we alternate between time doing seated and non seated practices. We always work mindfully with breath. Over the course of the class, we mobilize all the major joints and explore a combination of seated and standing movements, always with the option of using the chair for balance, and always offering progressions and modifications (see photo gallery below). We often start with a foot massage with yoga therapy balls and we finish with some focused breathing and a short guided meditation.

The invitation is always to meet yourself where you are on any given day, to listen with kindness and care to your own body and respect the signals you are receiving about where the limits are for you. Our motto is “embrace challenge, drop struggle!” You are always welcome to adjourn to a seated variation or simply take a break.

We work to improve balance, strength and overall suppleness and ease of movement. It’s a priority to improve postural awareness and understand what ways of moving are functional on and off the yoga mat. You’ll often leave with little “yoga snacks” that you’ll feel confident to play with in your own time and in your own life, for example exploring balancing with heels off the ground while you wait for the kettle to boil in the morning, or doing some gentle neck rotations at the beginning and the end of each car journey. It is our hope that you can take the yoga off the mat and carry it back into your life!
