What Is Mindful Yoga?
The gentle movements and breathwork we practice in mindful yoga help align us with the reality of our bodies moment by moment, breath by breath. The invitation is to meet yourself where you are and to this end, variations and modifications are offered and encouraged so that everybody feels welcome in their own body. Mindful Yoga invites us into the felt experience of living in
a body alive with sensation
heart pulsing with emotions
a mind bubbling with thoughts
How do we negotiate this unpredictable terrain of aliveness? The mindfulness tradition suggests we take it moment by moment while at the same time holding space for the big picture wisdom teachings that allow us to cultivate trust in this moment to moment approach.
While we are certainly bringing physiological benefit to the body, as we release stress and building both strength and suppleness, most importantly, we are using the tools and techniques of hatha yoga to cultivate the art of attention to what is here and now. We learn that we can gather ourselves into the present moment, there is space for insights about our lives to arise and be known.
The intention is always to meet ourselves where we actually are rather than some projected idea of where we “should” be. We work with the reality of our situation, whether that be challenge in the body heart or mind, without attempting to aggressively manipulate, perform or perfect.
In this way, even though we do receive physical benefit, our focus is not on the poses for their own sake, but more on poses as containers for exploring how to embody the principles of mindfulness, how to cultivate presence, wisdom and compassion.
