Ongoing: Saturday Morning Strong And Sweet

  • Yoga hOMe Sligo The Wellness Centre Sligo, SO Ireland (map)

What Is Saturday Strong And Sweet Yoga?

You can consider this Saturday morning yoga practice like a potent brew to set the tone for your weekend. It's a strong and sweet dynamic alignment flow inviting you into a balanced sense of energized action moving towards deep relaxation. Our movements will be based on the classic Sun Salutations sequence but with some playful variations.

How Is It Strong?

There will also be some time dedicated to somatic strength training, which means mindfully engaging the big muscle groups like quads, glutes and abdominals to support resiliancy, protect our joints and cultivate a stable foundation for all the movements of our spine on and off the yoga mat. We’ll use our own body weight (and sometimes some small hand weights) to play with gravity!

All of this strength training will be done somatically, meaning we do it slowly with focused awareness of our sensory experience and with breath as our guide to stay within a healthy and functional range of motion. The strength we are training is not only in terms of muscle tone and capacity but also in terms of strong proprioception skills (knowing where we are in space) and strong interoception skills (knowing how we feel within). These are abilities that are invaluable on our yoga mats but more importantly in life!

As we explore somatic strength training, our motto is “embrace challenge, drop struggle” which means we are demanding and pushing and performing for ego sake, but rather meeting ourselves where we are and getting really curious about how we might invite ourselves into shapes and movements that we have not explored before. Variations and modifications will be offered so that there is a progression towards some expression that is sustainable for each person. It’s not about making some ideal shape, but rather using some variation on the theme of a shape to grow our strength in body and mind and enjoy the process!

How Is It Sweet?

The sweet thing is that, as well as approaching both the dynamic movements and the strength training with a basic attitude of friendliness and fun, we offer ourselves the sweetness of restorative yoga to finish--A minimum of 30 minutes devoted to rest to close our morning.

If you have never "tasted" restorative yoga, with all the bells and whistles of blankets and bolsters, you'll be amazed how doing nothing but being everything can be the most productive thing you can (not) do! I predict restorative may become your favourite part of any yoga practice. Our goal is to work hard, play hard and rest deeply ❤️

Who Is This Class For?

This class is for suitable for everyone except those who are brand new to yoga. It is recommended that you have at least 6 months of regular yoga practice. Those who are brand new to yoga can try one of the following courses; Beginning Yoga or Mindful Yoga or Grit and Grace Level 1

There will be modifications offered so that practitioners with different levels of experience and regularity of practice can meet themselves where they are and embrace the challenges offered without having to struggle to do less or more than is appropriate for them on the day.
