Mindful Yoga for Teens will run in two six week sessions from Sept until Christmas. The first course will run from Sept 10th through Oct 22nd and the second course will run from Nov 5th through Dec 10th (no class Oct 1st as YHS is closed that day, nor Oct 29th during the school midterm break). You can sign up here for either or both, as the courses will shift focus to keep the experience fresh and interesting.
At Yoga Home Sligo, we are passionate about bringing Mindful Mindful Yoga to Teens because more and more, teens are prone to stress and anxiety, some of which is part of the natural upheaval of crossing from being children to young adults, but increasingly competitive academic standards and the ubiquitous nature of social media have also taken a heavy toll. The statistics are compelling:
Nearly two thirds of Irish students interviewed as part of an international OECD study earlier this year revealed that they suffered from anxiety even when well prepared for an exam. 46% felt very tense even when studying. In all countries, girls reported greater school work-related anxiety than boys. Teenage girls were also found to have lower life satisfaction than boys with only 29% of teenage girls, internationally, saying they were very satisfied with their lives (compared to 39% of boys).

Mindfulness based yoga and meditation has been proven to be effective at reducing stress and anxiety by bringing participants back to the present moment and anchoring them in the breath and the immediate sensations of the body in motion.
Mindful yoga emphasizes meeting yourself in a friendly and nurturing way, a much needed refuge from the world of comparison and critique that most teens face in school and online. Many teens have a conflicted relationship with their bodies and this Mindful Yoga class will emphasize a loving, kind and appreciative relationship with the body no matter what size or shape it is. At the same time, the relative difficulty of some yoga movement teaches teens to cultivate both inner and outer strength to meet the physical and emotional challenges that life presents.
Mindful yoga helps teens connect with their bodies, thoughts and emotions with friendliness, curiosity, and skillfulness. We'll work on relieving stress and anxiety while building confidence & resilience and tapping into a natural capacity for joy and ease.
Students can expect to learn
practical mindfulness techniques to calm the busy/anxious mind
yoga poses and breathing to help settle energy when feeling restless and agitated
yoga poses and breathing to help stimulate energy when feeling listless and sluggish
practical mindfulness techniques to help self-soothe and encourage when feeling sad/lonely/disappointed
a sense of empowerment balanced with a sense of kindness and appreciation for oneself and others
a sense of greater confidence and resilience
an increased curiosity about wellness and self-care practices
