Mindfulness is a word that is increasingly prominent in our culture, and thankfully so because it is part of a powerful set of teachings and practices for understanding well-being, and offers very specific techniques to help us re-connect to the field of awareness within which we can realize our innate potential for wisdom and so happiness.
Nevertheless there is a good deal of confusion about what mindfulness actually is and there are lots of myths out there suggesting some or all of the following: mindfulness is about being quiet and nice and generally feeling good about everything and never losing your temper and always putting others first. Mindfulness is not about any of these things!
Although mindfulness comes to us from the teachings of the Buddha and as such is part of a larger framework of philosophical teachings on ethics and the nature of reality, mindfulness is not a set of beliefs we are asked to subscribe to, but rather it is a set of practices offered to help train us in paying careful attention to our present moment experience of body mind heart.
Sounds simple but so habituated are we to jumping into planning a future or rehashing the past that it's actually not at all easy for most of us to stay in the here and now. Many who try mindfulness meditation for the first time are often struck by the difficulty of staying present and quickly jump to the faulty and unfortunate conclusion that they are simply “no good at meditation.” However, there’s no such thing as being a good meditator or a bad meditator. You simply do the meditation practice and observe.
Certainly there are instructions, suggestions for “skillful means,” information about what obstacles you are most likely to encounter in the process and suggestions for how to work with them, but the teachings are maps and it is crucial to remember that maps are never the territory. The territory is your present moment encounter with reality. In mindfulness practice, we believe nothing but rather see for ourselves what is revealed when we stay present with our body mind heart moment by moment. And over time, you decide whether the teachings and practices resonate and whether they are of benefit.
In this workshop series, we will explore what mindfulness is and what it is not, hopefully clarifying some of the prevalent misunderstandings, and we'll talk about the benefits of mindfulness
But because mindfulness is something to practice and not just talk about of think about, we'll spend most of our time working with some of the basic mindfulness practices (including both sitting and moving meditation). However, we will talk about some of the inevitable bumps on the path of practice so that when we meet them we do not fall into the trap of thinking that we're simply not able to meditate.
