The Winter Light Immersion Series is designed to help you connect with your innate strengths and inner fire, your inner capacity for light, heat, wisdom and love even as the weather grows colder and the days grow darker.
VIA Yoga: The Art of Core Integration is the third session in the Winter Light Immersion series but each day-long can be taken as a stand-alone experience and even though there will be threads of connection across all six sessions in the series, great benefit can be found in even just one day of winter light yoga—you’ll leave with resources to take off the mat and into your life.
VIA stands for The Way of Integrated Values, Intention and Action.
Yoga has been defined as skill in action, but it is very difficult to be skillful in our action if we are not clear what our intention is and whether that intention is in accordance with our core values. Without clarity around values, our intentions may be confused and our actions misguided. If we are not operating from the compass of our core values and capacities, we are often flailing, over-efforting and run the risk of becoming lost, depleted and injured on multiple levels, not just in our minds and hearts, but in our bodies too.
Join us for a day of exploring integrated core values and core capacity as opposed to the oft used “core power.” Anatomically, our core strength is crucial if we are to practice yoga asana (postural yoga) in a way that is safe, sustainable and nourishing. We learn that the “core” is not just the superficial abdominal muscles and capacity is different from “power” as we commonly use that term. Building resilience wisely in the body, by honoring the breath and the vital life force that moves us from within, can inspire us to find similar strengths and capacities for expansion in other areas of our life. A deep bow of gratitude to my teacher Stacey Rosenberg for the wisdom of Core Integration in my practice and teaching.
Similarly, in yoga psychology, we look to cultivate not just raw force of will, but the capacity for skillful and effective action in the furtherance of values-based intention, consciously rooted in the heartmind. This calls for exploration, reflection, strengthening, but also softening. We want to be anchored in authentic values, but not rigid. We want to have clarity about what we feel and where we stand, but have some flexibility and spaciousness in our exchanges with others. As my teacher Katchie Ananda says, we need to liberate the body and stretch the mind. (A deep bow of Gratitude to Katchie for anchoring my yoga practice and teaching in the values of the dharma.)
In the morning movement, meditation and breath practice, Yoga Teacher Cathi Murphy will explore our anatomical and energetic core and how to work with wise intention, focusing on the "torset" (the whole corset of the torso) and deeply valuing the breath in the movement of both body and mind.
In the afternoon, Life Coach and Yoga Teacher Anne-Marie Southcombe will bring wisdom from the world of Coaching to help us explore, reflect and clarify values, intentions and how to act from that core orientation.
