Yoga for Back Care: Re-align and Liberate Your Spine!
Whether you are currently suffering from back pain or not, EVERYBODY can benefit from understanding optimal spinal alignment in everyday movement—a huge amount of suffering in this part of the body can be prevented and/or alleviated by informed postural awareness. Knowledge is power and this course empowers you with both knowledge and techniques to move through your life with the muscular-skeletal intelligence that liberates both body and mind.
This course comprises of a set of 5 2 hour classes spread out over 3 months and is specially designed to equip you to bring relief to yourself from the postural dis-ease of the spine that is caused by many of the habits and patterns of our daily routine. You'll learn some spinal anatomy and how to cultivate a sustainable balance of strength and flexibility so you can sit, stand, move and breath with more freedom. You will leave this course with specific daily techniques to put into practice and the notes and follow-up material to keep weaving what you learn in this course in your own life
Why do we Suffer?
Back problems are an epidemic in our modern culture. Many of us, because of work or other daily patterns, sit more than we stand or move, and unfortunately we don't often sit in a way that preserves the natural curves of the spine.
We have also become avid users of devices the use of which pulls our skull forward and down, causing a rounding in the upper spine, an increase in the “load” on the lower spine.
In short, modern living encourages us into unhealthy postures that cause rampant upper and lower back DIS-EASE. Furthermore, this rounding in the upper body holds us in a shallow breath pattern, and when we are not free to breathe deeply we disable the body's natural self-regulating energy system--breath is life and if we are not breathing fully we are not living fully.
It doesn't have to be like this!
Focused, gentle, mindful yoga CAN HELP. We'll use a variety of props--from the support of chairs and straps, to the self massage of yoga therapy balls--to access all areas that need attention and re-patterning. You will learn techniques from mindfulness meditation to help your build a new relationship with intense sensation and discomfort so that you are not enslaved to "pain". In summary, you'll learn yoga practices specifically designed to tackle the causes and conditions of your suffering and gain the confidence to take them out of the yoga room and into your own life, taking definite steps towards the liberation of your spine.
This class is suitable for all levels. However, if you are suffering from an acute episode of pain and/or have recently had a surgery please do consult your health care practitioner to see whether this class is advised for you.
